Route guide
Messina to Villa San Giovanni ferry
Messina–Villa San Giovanni is the main passenger-and-vehicle ferry across the Strait of Messina.
Caronte & Tourist operates the service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it the key road
link between Sicily and mainland Italy.
C&T gives the crossing itself as approximately 20 minutes. The published timetable from 17 July 2026
shows very frequent departures through the day, generally at 20- to 40-minute intervals, with an
all-night service.
Unlike the Liberty Lines Messina–Reggio Calabria route, this crossing carries cars, motorcycles,
campers, buses, bicycles and foot passengers. Choose the port pair according to whether you need a
vehicle or a city-centre passenger connection.
Before booking, compare the complete itinerary rather than only the headline departure time. Check
every intermediate call, the exact arrival time, the vessel type and the operator-specific boarding
deadline. For island routes, also confirm local vehicle restrictions and the arrival harbour; for
Strait crossings, choose the port pair that matches whether you are travelling on foot or with a
vehicle. A small difference in sailing time can be outweighed by a much better onward connection.
If you are connecting to accommodation, another ferry or ground transport, leave a sensible margin
after the scheduled arrival. Weather, port traffic and boarding operations can occasionally affect
the final timing.
