About the operator

Italy’s largest fast-passenger maritime operator

Liberty Lines was founded in 1993 as Ustica Lines and has grown into Italy’s largest company dedicated to high-speed passenger maritime transport. The company says it carries more than 3.5 million travellers a year with a fleet of more than 30 HSC vessels.

Its core network links Sicily with the Aeolian, Egadi and Pelagie Islands, Ustica and Pantelleria. Liberty Lines also operates the fast Messina–Reggio Calabria service across the Strait and a summer network from Trieste to destinations in Slovenia and Croatia.

The fleet is deliberately passenger-focused: hydrofoils, monohulls, catamarans and next-generation HSC hybrids. These are not conventional RoPax vehicle ferries, so cars and motorcycles do not travel on the normal Liberty Lines high-speed services.

Standard passenger seating

Best considered for The normal ticket is for a passenger seat inside a high-speed craft. For safety, Liberty Lines requires passengers to remain seated during navigation until mooring is complete.

HSC Hybrid comfort

Best considered for The new 39.5-metre hybrid vessels carry up to 251 passengers and are designed for improved comfort and smoother operation while retaining high-speed performance.

Hydrofoil seating

Best considered for Traditional hydrofoils remain an important part of the fleet. Vessel type is allocated according to operational needs, so a particular craft cannot be assumed from the route name alone.

Catamarans and monohulls

Best considered for Liberty Lines also uses catamarans and monohull HSCs. Seating layout and accessibility differ by vessel, but all are passenger-focused fast craft rather than vehicle ferries.

Best considered for One hand-luggage item up to 10 kg and 60 × 40 × 20 cm is included. Additional luggage requires a baggage ticket and bulky items can be refused if they affect safe operation.

Bicycles, pets and accessibility

Liberty Lines is not a conventional vehicle-ferry operator. Cars and motorcycles are not carried on normal HSC services, while bicycles have narrow exceptions and pets travel under specific safety rules.

Then look at the operational details. These are passenger-only HSC services, so motorists need another operator. Standard bicycles are generally not carried except on the Istrian Coast route, while luggage and pets have precise conditions.
